Campbell in Recognition for His Father’s Service to the
Commonwealth
What is known is that Arthur was also guardian for Francis
Preston, the grandson of John Preston and his wife Elizabeth
Patton Preston.
Francis was educated at William and Mary, where he studied law
under George Wythe. He served in both houses of the General
Assembly and in Congress.
He became a Brigadier General in the War of 1812.
He practiced law in Abingdon, where his mansion, built in
1832, became the Martha Washington Inn.
What is bazaar about Arthur Campbell having been guardian for
both Sarah Campbell and Francis Preston is that Sarah and
Francis later married, and Sarah became the grand mover and
shaker in the salt business while Francis was off in the General
Assembly and in fighting in the War of 1812.
Arthur, his father “White” David Campbell, and Arthur’s brothers
John and David. Jr., and an unnamed sister, had bought adjoining
plantations from Col. John Buchanan at Royal Oak, present
Marion, Virginia.
There Arthur built the first mill in this part of Virginia.
He was one of the fifteen signers of the Fincastle
Resolutions, which was the first document advocating violent
revolution against England.
