Arthur resigned as administrator of Sarah’s estate, and
moved to Middlesboro, Kentucky.

The Rebuilt Madam Russell Cabin in Saltville
Where She and
General Russell Lived
Madam Russell’s sister, Susannah Henry, had married Thomas
Madison, a cousin of President James Madison.
In 1789 the court appointed Madison as guardian of Sarah
in place of Campbell and Christian. The Madisons moved to the
southeastern corner of the Campbell’s Choice tract, and built a
log house there.
Sarah Buchanan Campbell was raised in that house by the
Madisons.
Thus the two Henry sisters, Elizabeth and Susannah, lived facing
each other, about a mile apart.
The tradition is that they had inherited “the Henry
voice”, and that they could carry on conversations with each
other from their front porches.
General Russell dug a well in the salt flats in front of his and
Madam Russell’s house, and built an evaporator furnace for the
commercial manufacture of salt.
Madam Russell became a champion of the start of Methodism in the
region. The famous
missionary, Bishop Francis Asbury, visited the Russells in their
