        Charles Campbell’s Last Saltville Grant

          Clearly, whoever the adult was who was acting on the behalf of the Campbell children had an eye on the economic potential at Saltville.  Also, equally clearly, the stage was set for conflict with Alexander Outlaw, whose unregistered surveys were within the bounds of these grants. 

         There are two possibilities for who this individual could have been.  The children’s mother, Elizabeth Henry Campbell, was alive and active.  However, she seems to not have involved herself in business affairs, and to have deferred to the men in her life in this respect.  Everything points to Col. Arthur Campbell.  He was both a cousin of General William’s (his father was “White” David), and the brother-in-law of the General’s, having married his sister Margaret.  He, along with Col. William Christian, is known to have been the legal guardian of Sarah early in her life.  We do not know about Charles Henry, but it would seem likely that Arthur was his guardian also.
